"You can help me cook," offered LeBeau to Kinch.
He blinked at Newkirk's question.
"I do not see any street rats here," he said softly. |

Kinch nodded and began sorting through the stuff that Newkirk had brought in from the guard's mess. |

LeBeau sorted it as well, and he found ingredients for a soup.
He began to cut a few of the vegetables.

Kinch grabbed and extra knife and began helping Lebeau cut the vegetables. |

LeBeau frowned, wondering why Kinch wasn't saying anything else.
He finished making the soup, and then went to go find bowls. He managed to find three, and put the soup into bowls.
"Here, it is finished," he said, and sat a bowl in front of Kinch. |

Newkirk just watched as LeBeau cooked. It smelled good, but he still didn't understand why the Frenchman was so willing to help him.
All of the Frenchmen he had met had looked down on him--it was bad enough that he was an uncouth philistine who knew nothing about culture or cuisine, but once they found out he was a street urchin, well... it got that much worse. |

LeBeau gave Newkirk a bowl of soup.
"Here, try this," he said gently. |

Newkirk took a few sips of the soup.
"It's good," he said. "Wot is it?" |

"Chicken soup," said LeBeau. "It is probably the only thing that is safe for you to eat right now. If you eat anything richer than this, you will get sick."
He sat beside Newkirk. "You do not like yourself, do you?" he asked gently. "I can tell. Why is that?" |

Newkirk nodded and drank some more of it.
He hesitated when LeBeau asked him why he looked down on himself.
"Well, I'm a bad 'un," he sighed. "Ruddy menace to society." |

LeBeau blinked and then chuckled.
He reached out and ruffled Newkirk's hair. "Well, you are not being a menace to me, so I like you," he declared.
He sighed to himself and looked down at the floor. "I think it is time I made some friends in this place." |

Newkirk gave him a wan smile.
"You've only known me for a few hours..." he warned him.
He blinked when the Frenchman told him he had no friends. That surprised him.
Well, Newkirk certainly knew that feeling... |

"I am a pretty good judge of character," said LeBeau. "I think you are good."
LeBeau caught Newkirk's surprised look and shrugged.
"I thought about escaping, and I didn't want to make friends, because I planned on being out of here." |

Kinch sat down to eat his food and he quietly studied the two younger men. He had been quiet because he was trying to decide if he should tell them why he was really here. Finally, he decided to speak up. "I need to tell you guys something but you need to keep it a secret. Lives depend on it". |
