Kinch continued to work the wood carefull and under his skilled fingers, it began to take even more of a deffinate shape. His grandfather had been a skilled wood carver and had taught Kinch everything he knew. |

LeBeau went over to his footlocker and found a tin of shortbread cookies one of his sisters had sent him. He held out the tin to Newkirk and Kinch.
"Here, have some," he offered. "They taste better than anything in the mess hall." |

Kinch smiled delightedly and quickly set aside the piece of wood he had been working on and accepted a cookie. "Mmmm. Thanks", he said gratefully. "I haven't even seen a cookie in weeks". |

Newkirk hesitated as LeBeau offered the cookies, not sure if depriving the Frenchman of such a precious commodity was a good idea. |

LeBeau smiled back at Kinch. "I have a whole tin, please take more," he urged.
He looked over at Newkirk and sensed his hesitance to take any. He took three cookies and put them in Newkirk's hand.
"Eat, they are meant to be shared and enjoyed among friends," he said softly. |

Newkirk managed a smile and bit into one of the cookies.
"'ey, these are good!" he said. "Your sister made these?" |

LeBeau grinned. "Oui she did make them. I can write another letter to her, asking for more." |

Kinch nibbled the cookie and when he was done, he picked up the piece of wood and began carving again. Finally, he sat it aside and grinned. "Either of you have shoe polish?" he asked with a smirk. |

"Sorry, no polish 'ere," he said to Kinch.
Newkirk didn't reply to LeBeau at first.
"...Why are you so nice to me?" he asked, after some time. |

Kinch looked to Lebeau, hoping the smaller man had some shoe polish. |

LeBeau grinned at Kinch. "I have some polish in my footlocker," he said, and rummaged around until he found some. He handed it to Kinch and turned when he heard Newkirk.
"Because I have no reason to not be nice to you," he said gently. |

Kinch smiled and thanked Lebeau and then set about putting the shoe polish on the homemade wooden gun. "As long as we don't get too close to him, this should fool that big kraut when we get ready to escape". He looked at Newkirk then and smiled softly. "We care about you becuse you deserve it. You just need to believe it yourself". |

LeBeau nodded approvingly at the fake gun. "It is starting to look real to me," he said to Kinch. |

Newkirk nodded in agreement with LeBeau, thinking about what they had just said.
...Did this mean that he finally had friends who weren't street rats like him, but people in a higher place in society--just because they liked him for who he was? |

LeBeau reached out and ruffled Newkirk's hair.
"So, tell us about yourself," he said. "What about your family, and what you did before the war?" |
