Newkirk sighed.
"About a month, I think..." he said. "'aven't eaten a thing since I was caught... until today."
The medic--the one before Wilson--now tapped LeBeau on the shoulder.
"Can I have a word with you?" |

LeBeau listened to Newkirk and nodded his head.
"They are all monsters," he muttered, but then turned when the medic asked to talk to him.
He got up. "Sure," he said, wondering what the medic wanted to say. |

Newkirk shrugged it off.
The medic made sure that Newkirk couldn't hear him.
"I checked him out before he was allowed to come to the barracks. He's severely underweight and undernourished. ...I'm afraid he probably doesn't have more than another week to live unless, by some miracle, he can be nourished back to health." |

LeBeau blinked when he heard the medic.
"I think I might be able to manage that," he said, and went back to Newkirk.
"You remember that guard that was just in here?" he said. "Well, I'm going to go bribe him for ingredients for a soup, and after I get them, I am going to make the soup, and you are going to eat it." |

The medic sighed.
"I hope you're right. But from what I heard, he just won't eat."
Newkirk blinked as LeBeau talked to him about the soup.
"But I ain't 'ungry," he said. |

"Well, he has never had to deal with me before," LeBeau said to the medic.
He nonchalantly pulled Newkirk's sweater up. "You look like this and yet you say you are not hungry," he said quietly. He sighed then.
"I do not think the problem is whether you are hungry or not. I think you are punishing yourself for something. What is it?" he asked. "What are you punishing yourself for?" |

Newkirk's eyes shifted as LeBeau looked at his condition.
"I... er...."
He sunk back into his pillow.
"Me squadron mates..." he whispered. "They're all dead." |

LeBeau let go of Newkirk's sweater, and he pulled the blanket up to the Englishman's shoulders.
"I am sorry about your friends," he said sadly. "But I do not think they would want you to starve yourself like this."

Newkirk sighed.
"I suppose..." he said. "But... I probably could've done something to save them... but I didn't." |

"Worrying about that now is not going to bring them back," said LeBeau gently.
"Starving yourself is not the answer." |

"But now I'm used to not eating. Always been that way--never had the money most of the time to afford a decent meal...." Newkirk said.
He did not realize the danger he was in.

"But that is not healthy, surely you must know that," said LeBeau, as he went over to the stove.
"I am going to use your ingredients that you got me and I will make something for you to eat. And you will eat it," he insisted. |

Kinch came over to Lebeau. "Is there anything I can do to help?" he asked worriedly. |

Newkirk blinked.
"Why?" he asked. "I mean... why do you care what 'appens to a... a street rat?"

"I'll let you know that when I see a street rat", Kinch said. "What I see here, is a human being that needs help and care". |
