Newkirk smiled as LeBeau ruffled his hair, but then looked down as LeBeau asked him about his past.

"I... 'aven't got a family, except for me sister," he said. "Me mum died when I was 15, and me dad left us soon after that."

He sighed.

"Before the war, I tried to be a performer. But work wasn't very plentiful back then. Most of the time, I was a thief."

"I am sorry," said LeBeau softly. "Maybe after the war, you will be able to get work if you tell people you are a veteran," he offered.

He had taken a liking to the young Englishman, and thought for a long time before speaking.

"You know... I plan on opening up my restaurant after the war. If you want, you could work with me. We could be co-owners of the restaurant."

Newkirk blinked in surprise.

"I... don't know anything about cooking," he confessed.

But he couldn't deny that he would like a steady job.
