LeBeau stared out the one window of Barracks Two, and eyed a truck-load of new prisoners suspiciously. He wasn't sure what to make of his potential new roommates. He wasn't sure he even wanted to socialize with new people. All he cared about was escaping this rotten camp. With one final glare out the window, he returned to his bunk, and attempted to brainstorm an escape plan. |

Among the many prisoners being forced out of the car was a weak, scrawny Englishman who could barely stand on his feet as he was forced out.
Peter Newkirk looked terrible; he hadn't eaten in... well, he didn't know long. He felt worse and worse with every passing moment. |

LeBeau hadn't noticed Newkirk getting out of the truck.
He laid on top of his bunk, stewing with anger at being imprisoned. He turned his head and looked out the window again. This time, he did see the Englishman. He felt bad when he saw the sorry state Newkirk was in, but figured there was nothing he could do if they put the Englishman in another barracks. His expression softened. Maybe having people to take care of wouldn't be so bad. |

Newkirk was quickly processed and then sent to Barracks 2, as that was the same barracks the medic was in.
Newkirk didn't say anything, though, as he came inside. He had long since known that everyone he met would look down upon him--if not because of his condition, then once they heard his background.
No one ever showed kindness to a street rat, after all. That was the way things were. |

LeBeau discreetly watched the Englishman enter the barracks. He wanted to do something for him, but wasn't sure if any hospitality would be well received.
He slowly climbed down from his bunk and went over to his foot-locker. He withdrew a package of long, wide crackers, and approached Newkirk.
"Eat these," he instructed quietly. "I do not need them." |

Newkirk looked shocked and surprised as this Frenchman offered him his food.
"I can't..." he said, weakly. "I 'aven't been able to eat in days. Nothing stays down. Besides, you wouldn't want to share your food with someone like me." |

LeBeau insisted Newkirk take the crackers. "You need water too," he said, and went to go get Newkirk some drinking water.
He came back with a bucket and ladle. "It is clean," he said, and pushed the bucket in front of Newkirk. |

A second Englishman from the new group who had also been assigned the Barracks 2 now pulled LeBeau aside before Newkirk could reply to him about the water.
"I wouldn't show much kindness to him if I were you," he instructed, softly. "He's nothing but a thief from the streets. Can't get any lower than he is. Leave him alone and let him starve; it's best for all of us."

LeBeau blinked. "I will not let anybody starve. He has not done anything bad to me."
He went up to Newkirk. "Drink the water and eat the crackers," he insisted again. |

Sergeant James Kinchloe took a little longer than the others to be processed. He was closely interrogated by the commandant, a brutal man who knew he was losing his position at stalag 13 and would soon be replaced. Infact, his replacement was due today. But he used the last bit of his time at camp 13 to torment Kinch. Finally, the tall african american sergeant was released and headed over to his new barracks. His hands were finally uncuffed but they still bore raw marks from where the cuffs had been put on cruelly tight. They weren't so much afraid of him escaping but they were very concerned about what the big man was capable of physically. |

LeBeau turned and saw Kinch enter. It looked like he was getting another neighbor. He saw the bigger man's wrists and looked up at him.
"Do you need something for your hands?" he asked quietly in English. |

Kinch nodded grimly. "That would be nice", he said softly. He sat down and eyed Newkirk carefully. He had ridden in the truck with him and couldn't help but be worried for the younger man's health. "You going to be okay?" he asked gently. |

LeBeau managed to find bandages and cream for the man's hands.
"Here you are," he said softly, and handed the items to Kinch.

Kinch smiled. "Thanks", he said as he took the bandagings and cream. He spread the cream on and then clumsily began bandaging his wrists. "Really hurts", he sighed. "I think they thought I was going to try and take on a whole platoon by myself, I guess I shouldn't have told the one goon that I was a golden gloves champ", he chuckled. |

LeBeau sat down and observed Kinch. He listened for a few moments before speaking.
"That was not a smart thing to say," he agreed. "Why would you tell them that?" |
